Online data gatherings show that viewers have a short attention span and that the videos must be short in length and make the catechetical case in the first thirty seconds. Responses also showed a general lack of understanding of Real Presence and Eucharistic Sacrifice before viewing the videos and a greater understanding after viewing, suggesting success in the mystagogical method. The focus group responses showed high receptivity to the use of YouTube videos in liturgical and Eucharistic catechesis. Data was also collected from the social media websites. Focus Groups based in St Swithun’s Episcopal Church in the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina were used to gather responses on the effectiveness of the videos and the reception of Eucharistic doctrine. This project utilized the Internet, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to produce, share, and collect data on two videos on Real Presence and Eucharistic Sacrifice. Using the mystagogical homilies of Church Fathers as inspiration, this project uses social media to teach the Eucharistic doctrines of Real Presence and Sacrifice through video and social media. This decline is attributed in part to a lack of theological and liturgical identity rooted in the Holy Eucharist. It thereby proves the thesis that the Liturgy of the Eucharist in the Book of Common Prayer (1662) can be understood as an enacted pilgrimage that brings the Christian from the outside world to union with God.įrom 2000 to 2010, every domestic diocese in the Episcopal Church declined in average Sunday attendance. The research identifies three key shared components between pilgrimage and the liturgy of the Eucharist in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. The investigation then studies the liturgy of the Eucharist inclusive of eucharistic theology and the eucharistic liturgical form and flow. The investigation was conducted through a qualitative analysis of pilgrimage inclusive of pilgrim spirituality, biblical precedents, the church fathers, historical, and modern theological perspectives. This, in turn, can be a basis for a more robust understanding of the Eucharist and mitigation of any existing apathy toward the liturgy. To that end, the purpose of this investigation is to identify those aspects that are commonly shared between pilgrimage and the form and flow of the eucharistic liturgy in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer while suggesting the recognition of the eucharistic liturgy as a form of enacted pilgrimage. Identifying ways in which to express and embody the depth of the liturgical action and sacramental effect is one means to help offset this challenge. There is a widespread acknowledgement of an overall decline in church participation both in the United States and abroad. “Understanding the 1662 Book of Common Prayer Liturgy of the Eucharist as a Christian Pilgrimage.” Master of Sacred Theology Thesis, Nashotah House Theological Seminary, 2023.
